Seasoned By Salt
by Rodney Barfield
A Historical Album of the Outer Banks
|
The Outer Banks of North Carolina have had a lively and sometimes lurid history going back four centuries.
These barrier islands, frequently battered by storms and hurricanes, were the site of the first English colony in
North America and figured prominently in the Civil War. The hundreds of shipwrecks off their shores have earned
the Outer Banks a reputation as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic." But throughout this turbulent history,
the Banks have also been home to tight-knit communities in which families depended on each other for the basic
necessities of life.
In the print version, Seasoned By Salt includes more than 150 historic photographs and drawings,
most never before published, to create a visual portrait of the Outer Banks' history and the people who live it.
Rodney Barfield and The University of North Carolina Press have graciously allowed ICW.NET, LLC to use this
material as part of our coastal web project.
